Google’s John Mueller recently shared a number of tweets with specific SEO advice on what to do if you remove or disable features from parts of your website or your entire website to encourage users to take action on an issue. So when you replace your homepage with a message or something else, you want to use it to avoid SEO problems.

If you replace your homepage with a new message, Google can crawl and index that new homepage and then think that your website is about something else. So if you sell blue widgets and your homepage is all about blue widgets, and you want to replace them with a message about social change, Google won’t see anything about blue widgets. This can affect your rankings and confuse Google.

Google’s John Mueller said 503 server status codes could come to your rescue. John said, “If you remove, replace, or redirect your normal content, search engines may index your pages that way (or remove them from the index). It can have a negative impact on the overall visibility of your site when searching. You, however.” can also do it in a search neutral way: 503. “He added,” Returning a 503 HTTP result code tells search engines to ignore the current content and come back a little later. “

We have explained here how 503s can be used frequently when searching. So not much of this is new, but something prompted John to post these tweets. Here you are:

If you remove, replace, or redirect your normal content, search engines may index your pages that way (or delete them from the index). This can have a negative impact on the general visibility of your website when searching. However, you can also do this in a search neutral way: 503

What if you realize this tweet too late? Google may have already reprocessed URLs from your website (as 404 or 200) and it is possible that these will be reflected in search. However, this is usually fixed quickly once the site is restored.

If this doesn’t apply to you at the moment, be sure to think about “503 = Temporary Age” so that you know what to look out for if you need to.
